What does rhinoplasty do?
Your goals decide the change
Rhinoplasty is surgery on the nose. What it changes in your nose depends on the plan you and your surgeon agree on, so the honest answer starts with your goals. Ask whether your goal is how the nose looks, how it works, or both, since the plan should follow from that.
Why the plan matters more than the name
The word can cover a range of work, so ask for the specific changes planned rather than the operation name. Over time, one question matters more than most: how will the nose age after the change? Ask your surgeon how the plan accounts for healing and aging, and what they have seen at five years and beyond.
Not every nose change is surgical. A plastic surgery society has written about why nonsurgical rhinoplasty is gaining popularity and published an in-depth examination of liquid rhinoplasty. Reading both helps you see where the surgical and nonsurgical routes differ before you decide which to ask about.
Nose questions to compare across surgeons
Put these to every surgeon you meet:
- What specifically will you change in my nose, and what will stay the same?
- Do you recommend surgery or a nonsurgical option for my goal, and why?
- How do you expect this result to look as my face ages?
- What would a revision involve if I want a change later?
Write the answers down and compare them across surgeons.
Only an exam of your nose
General reading on rhinoplasty is not medical advice. Only an exam of your own nose can tell you what a procedure would do for you.
